The end of yet another World Cup

Adidas WC 2010 Repliqué Soccer Ball, White/Black/Pure Yellow, 5 This article isn’t a few days early. It is yet another English fan scripting an account of a disappointing outing for England. Let me confess my interest in football began only about 2 years ago. I became an ardent fan of Chelsea. Didier Drogba is the reason I got attracted towards Chelsea and later became a big fan of most of the players. One player who’d top the list is the most faithful yet underrated soldier of Chelsea and England Frank Lampard. With Lampard and Terry being a part of Chelsea my loyalties definitely rested with England for the World Cup 2010 though an English fan is a person who usually gets snubbed pretty soon in the season. England did the expected. They didn’t look like champions in any of the games they played. An under-5-minutes brilliance from Steven Gerrard in the first game didn’t make England look like giants. They struggled their way through USA’s formation and could not break it. Defensive...

The story of the storytellers

Dork: The Incredible Adventures of Robin Einstein Varghese If Chetan Bhagat didn’t do enough to inspire me and confuse me, Sidin Vadukut has just taken it to another level. Let me tell you a little bit about the “CAT” grind. Any averagely informed MBA seeker will realize that there are 6 institutes located in 6 different places of India that abbreviate to 3 letters and one has to master an entrance test, again abbreviated to three letters, to get through the portals of the apex institutes of the management world in India. Once you join a coaching centre it pretty much becomes clear that if the picture of IIM Ahmedabad does not feature next to your beloved family deities then you aren’t really serious about your classes in these institutes which will put you through a psychological toughness that is required to endure 2 hours which will largely constitute inability to answer most questions. Once you come out you feel like shit and feel much better when you see the thousand odd students ...

Love Letter for Gingerchai

This post has been published by me as a team member of The Rodeo Writers team for the SUPER 6 round of Bloggers Premier League (BPL) – The first ever unique, elite team blogging event of blog world. To catch the BPL action and also be part of future editions and other contests, visit and register at Cafe GingerChai Words aren’t enough but words are all I have. So I will try and tell you in as many words that will still be grossly inadequate. You make me feel like morning dew! Have you ever noticed that you never see the dew forming? You just know it is there every morning. Green leaves are beautiful. The flowers are lovely. But have you seen what the dew did? It made the green leaves come alive with color. It has made the petals of the flowers sizzle. It created fragrance out of mud. It brought dead things to life. That is what you did to me, you brought me to life. From the day I came to know you I’ve started loving myself even more. I know that I should be worthy of the appr...

How do you like that corner office?

How do you like that corner office? How I would like that to be mine? Do you see that large cabin in office, one day that’ll be mine? I just saw a porcelain cup and saucer filled with tea being taken into that large cabin. I guess this is the moment when you look at it and say “One day, they will bring that cup to me in my cabin”. But god, help!! I am not feeling that way. I haven’t felt that way since the first day at work or for that matter any day at work. Is this a common syndrome or am I just freaking out? If I am just freaking out why does the mirror on the washroom read Misfit on top of my reflection?

One Shot Story...

This is it. He did it. He always wanted this. In fact he had never wanted anything else. His life was a pure dedication to achieve just this one thing. He could feel himself beaming uncontrollably. His friends hadn’t stopped calling. The ones that could rush up to him have all seen him, wished him and held him close to their chests. They could feel his elation. They all knew that in his life only that mattered and he had done it. He had never known anything else apart from the Everest he had set to climb. The path was never going to be easy. The very friends who couldn’t contain their pride for their friend had warned him against it. They kept stressing how he was set on a wild goose chase and how he would end up a loser. They threatened him not to ever talk to him again if he still wanted to pursue it. He had hesitated not because he was confused if this was the path to take, only to find words to convey that he is resolute and his decision will not change whatever be the consequence....

Have you been a victim of attraction?

Have you been a victim of attraction? It is so tempting that even if u are made of steel, u’ve got to sway. It’s irresistible. It is seductive. It keeps luring you away. Attraction is usually for something, for example you are attracted to a particular object or person. Attainment of the same isn’t half as fulfilling as what attraction does to us. That’s why Hope is such a wonderful thing. It keeps us in a dream land of belief that someday things will change. The concept of some day is so fantastic that it, in most cases, will lead you to inaction. The “some day” has to be created by you. Hoping is just the odor. The actual thing is the source of the sweetness. Odor just has a marijuana effect, hence fighting it is tremendously difficult. You need guts to overcome the lure of attraction. It is fancy to dream big but if you don’t know your route to achievement then your dream is just a movie that has flown you away one minute and crash lands you the next. But attraction in itself isn’...

Wish I could go back in time…

Saturdays are particularly difficult days to work. But you got to do it. So I set out today as usual. On my way to work I saw a girl and a guy chatting away to glory on the roadside. Nothing spectacular but I had a smile on my face because it had brought a lot of memories from my college days back. How many times have we wondered, if only I could bring back the days of the past? I am constantly reminded of this song by Travis in his album Ode to J. Smith whose lyrics read like this In the days before we were young We used to sit in the morning sun We used to turn the radio on What happened? We yearn for the bygones. Lots of us have this feeling that those days when we were younger, more innocent and more ignorant were much better. Given a chance we would love to go back and live that life. We would love to go back and not only live those times but also in a much better way because now we know the value of that fleeting moment. We now know what all we could have done. May be t...

The Woman

The woman is a collection of ironies. My observation is that an average woman is subject to a deep conflict, always. It is whether to be the person I am or to be the person that I am expected to be. A male on the other hand usually starts assuming more responsibility after an age and hence experiences individuality. At that very same age a woman shifts base from a place where she has spent 25 years of her life to a totally new place with totally new people. The comfort of familiarity no longer exists. It’s like Chapter 2 with a totally new cast. I am reading a book called “It rained all night” by a well known Bengali literate Buddhadeva Bose. It reveals several such sensitivities and how a woman has a lot to endure and how taxing this can be on her psyche. We live in different times. Women have shed their conservativeness and fought their way up to a place where their deserved equal rights can be enjoyed. Their individuality has found voice and we see many a remarkable woman today. Tho...

Women's day

This day marks the true tribute to one deserved half of the world. Yes, I do know there exists a third variety of the sexes. But innately they either feel like a woman or man. So my statement is justified. This day is a truly remarkable day. I have a special affiliation to it as you would see as I spell it out. Our office had a small celebration today for Women’s day. Celebrations such as these if celebrated at our homes or clubs are called occasions and in a corporate set they are called engagement activities. I seriously don’t know how people get engaged especially when they get pulled out of work to hear some clichéd words and eat some cake and samosa and effectively ruin 30 mins of the day. Without digressing much (you have no idea how much I would love to go on and on………. on this) let me bring you back to our inglorious (sorry Quentin) women’s day celebrations. Did I mention clichés before? So they go like this, one employee asks the other “how come there isn’t a Man’s day or Men’...

Are you alone in your work place?

Do you feel the following symptoms… a) You have very few friends in office. You can’t seem to relate to most people in office. b) You have no interest in your colleagues or the kind of conversations they seem to have. c) You have nothing to contribute during lunch time discussions on topics that are official and non official. d) You seem to spend more time on social networking sites than real people sitting in and around you. e) Your social life seems pretty meager and is highly disintegrated with your work life. f) You don’t enjoy any kind of official get togethers that happen within and outside office g) You talk to people only when there is work and no other time. h) You don’t seem to understand the jokes that are cracked by others and don’t seem to be able to get your jokes through. i) You seem to have an attitude mismatch with your colleagues. You don’t have any common interest area apart from work deliverables. j) You don’t seem to be pleased to meet your colleagues in the mornin...
